The App Store takes 1 to 10 screenshots per display size, plus up to 3 app preview videos. Google Play needs at least 2 to publish and takes up to 8 per device type; to be eligible for Play's promotional placements, apps need at least 4 phone screenshots and games at least 3.
For most apps, 5 to 8 is the right number on both stores, with the strongest first.

Which ones people see
- App Store search results show the first one to three screenshots when there is no app preview, depending on their orientation. Apple asks that these show the essence of your app.
- Google Play shows your screenshots in a row on the listing, and uses them in its promotional formats only when they meet the 9:16 or 16:9 minimums.
- On both stores most people never swipe to the end. The first two or three screenshots do most of the work.
How many you should make
- 5 to 8. Enough to cover what your app does best, few enough that each one earns its place.
- One idea per screenshot. If you can't write a short headline for one, it's two screenshots, or none.
- Order by strength, not by menu. Lead with the reason people download, not with onboarding or settings.
- Use the same story on both stores. The sizes differ, but the order and headlines can stay the same.
